Your Union has continued to grow with strong membership ensuring workers have the power to act collectively to achieve better working conditions, dignity, fairness and overcome injustice. The Queensland Branch has led the nation in delivering opportunities to enhance the campaigning, bargaining and representation skills of delegates by investing heavily in delegate development.

To continue this growth and development, the resources required to meet members’ expectations rely on a consistent and uninterrupted collection method of union fees across the Branch for the benefit of all members.

Your Union continues to face a serious threat to this consistent and uninterrupted collection of union fees through employer exploitation. Currently, a number of employers collect union fees on behalf of members – only to delay payment to your union for several months. This practice puts employers in control of your fees and can regrettably reduce the capacity of your union to deliver the necessary resources you require for assistance in managing workplace issues.

However, what is of a greater risk is a hostile government’s preference to introduce legislation which outlaws payroll deductions. These types of laws have been introduced in a number of states, with the Western Australia (WA) United Voice Branch having already suffered such an attack. This attack from a hostile government saw the WA (then LHMU) Branch forced to redirect their entire resources. Branch officials spent months contacting and educating thousands of members to ensure union strength was not lost across workplaces.

As Branch Secretary of one of the strongest unions in Queensland, it is my responsibility to ensure all members are protected from such an attack.

IT IS NOW THE TIME TO ACT TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF YOUR UNION.

Gary Bullock, United Voice Queensland Branch Secretary
