A member's personal best

Tue 16 Dec 08 Comments

LHMU member Albie Firley represented Australia at the 2008 Vancouver World Cup Triathlon.

Albie, a night-shift service team leader at Coca Cola’s Moorabbin plant, has been an LHMU member for more than a decade. He’d trained for months with a daily run or bike ride before working, knocking off at 6am to head to the pool.

But rough seas meant the swim segment was cancelled, leaving Abie disappointed. “I’d put in countless hours at crazy times,” he said. “There’s a huge mental and physical build-up to a big international competition and I’d been training hard for 12 months.”

Albie was the fifth Australian to cross the line, finishing 56th in the 101 field in the 35-39 age group and achieving a personal best on the bike course.

Despite not being able to swim, Albie described the event as a “truly unforgettable experience” and is already in training for the 2009 event which takes place on the Gold Coast.
