Airport campaign cleared for take-off

Sun 15 Jun 08 Comments

Members at Melbourne Airport, Victoria’s biggest security site, are campaigning for a new union agreement.

Airport ISS security delegate, Rob Smith, said guards have a strong case for significant pay increases.

‘We need to keep pace with rising petrol prices and other costs. Everything is getting more expensive,’ he said.

‘Our jobs are more demanding and complex than they’ve ever been.

‘Our skill levels have increased greatly in the last three years, and that’s set to continue. We need that recognised in our pay.’

Airport guards are now the front line in the government’s defence against terrorism.

‘To get the best possible outcome we need to grow union membership at the airport,’ said Rob.

‘If we can get to close to 100% union membership here we’ll be in a very strong position.’
