At last, healthier bank balances
Hotel members make Melbourne's Westin Hotel cough up.
Members at Melbourne’s Westin Hotel are celebrating after winning up to $400 in back-pay owed to them by their employer.
Late last year members won a $22 a week pay rise. But as the weeks rolled by, their pay remained the same.
“The
hotel said our agreement was still pending, so we just kept waiting,”
said delegate Tom Skoroplis. But members were suspicious.
“Then Marion put her foot down. We learned it had been approved before Christmas — they had just been holding off.”
Delegate Marion Stewart knew something was wrong when the hotel told her the agreement was not approved.
“I
got in contact with the Union Rights Centre and they sent a letter to
the Westin telling them to pay us within seven days,” said Marion
(pictured).
“If you don’t chase things up they will be pushed under the carpet; if you don’t speak up you can miss out.”
Members at the Westin learned a valuable lesson.
“It is important to never get complacent about your employer,” Tom said.
“Everyone’s rapt with the chunk of back-pay they got — it has helped them pay off their credit cards.”
“Congratulations
to all members at the Westin for standing up and demanding your
rights,” said United Voice Victorian Secretary Jess Walsh.
The URC can explain and enforce your rights at work.
