Australia's cleaners: no longer an invisible workforce

Tue 15 Jun 10

Today is International Justice for Cleaners Day and cleaners around Australia who are part of the LHMU's Clean Start campaign are once again taking to the streets with the message 'respect our jobs!'

International Justice for Cleaners Day draws attention to the conditions and struggles of cleaners across the globe.

Since the launch of the LHMU's Clean Start campaign, cleaners have been standing up to change their industry, and across the country they've won a new industry standard which delivers better jobs and better lives.

Cleaners in Tasmania and Western Australia are calling on cleaning companies to demonstrate their commitment to a fair deal for cleaners through the Clean Start industry reforms. Cleaners are calling on the few remaining cleaning companies holding their workforce back from a fair deal at work and fixing up the crisis in the cleaning industry.

The Clean Start Industry reforms provide respect and dignity for low wage workers through reasonable workloads, a living wage, safe working conditions and job security.

Supporters and community groups will stand with cleaners as they announce the winner of the 2010 Golden Toilet Brush Award. This award is for the companies stopping positive industry reform from going ahead and preventing cleaners from achieving better jobs, better lives, and respect for their important contribution to our workplaces and cities across Australia.

The winners of the Golden Toilet Brush award this year are:

  • ACT: Broadlex
  • TAS: General and Window
  • NSW: Broadlex
  • QLD: Baytons
  • WA: Mastercare
  • SA: Prime One
