BreastScreen Queensland employee and LHMU member Mariza Liasides met with Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, Hon Paul Lucas, MP and Mr Mick Reid on Wednesday 6 January to discuss Queensland Health's proposal to trial breast screening technicians.
LHMU members are concerned with the trial and the introduction of a lessor qualified workforce.
LHMU Vice President and delegate, Carol Corless also attended the meeting, representing the women of Lytton, Mr Lucas' electorate.
Ms Corless spoke of her experience as a BreastScreen Queensland patient and of how important it is to her to know that only the most qualified and professional people are attending to her, especially in what can be an uncertain and emotiationally difficult time.
It was agreed that a joint working party be established with representatives from the workforce, to explore alternative workforce solutions for the Breast Screen Program.
Mr Lucas was not prepared to remove the trial completely at this point.
The trial will continue to be in abeyance for 12 months, with any further progress in the long term, subject to thorough consultation with BreastScreen Queensland employees and LHMU.
