Carinya of Bicton Aged Care Workers Locked Out for Attending Community Cabinet
Aged Care Workers from Carinya of Bicton Aged Care have been locked out of their workplace, for a second time. This time, for fourteen days.
Thirty workers from Carinya of Bicton attended the Community Cabinet last night at South Fremantle High School.
Cathy Jorgensen, who has worked at Carinya of Bicton for 33 years wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister, published in the Melville Times. The workers were able to personally give the Prime Minister a copy.
They also spoke with a number of Cabinet Ministers including Industrial relations Minister Chris Evans, about the hard and undue treatment they are receiving at the hands of their employer.
Those carers who were rostered to work had notified Carinya ten days earlier that they would be taking four hours of protected industrial action in order to ensure that care would not be affected.
Mr Basire, who runs the facilities as a private company, responded by locking out the workers for fourteen days.
Dave Kelly, Secretary of United Voice, called this an “extreme response”. “To stop the pay of these workers for 14 days just because they want to attend Community Cabinet is plainly harsh” he said.
