Changes to ambulance review after paramedics' meeting

Tue 14 Jul 09 Comments

The Health Minister Kim Hames has agreed to changes to the Terms of Reference into an inquiry into the state's ambulance service after meeting with paramedics and LHMU representatives.

“We are pleased that the Health Minister listened to the concerns of our members,” said LHMU Assistant Secretary Carolyn Smith.

“Dr Hames has agreed to expand the Terms of Reference for the upcoming inquiry.

“For example, the Minister clarified that the inquiry would include a review of the provision of service to country areas.

“The inquiry will also now compare St John’s systems of independent medical review with those in other states.

“Other states have a panel of doctors to make such critical decisions, but here in Western Australia we rely solely on two part-time Medical Directors to make these decisions. The Minister agreed that this should be reviewed.

“Dr Hames also confirmed that the report would be published.

“Also of utmost importance is the protection of sources involved in the inquiry.

“Dr Hames has agreed to speak to St John Ambulance management about their staff being able to provide information to the inquiry without fear of retribution.

“We are expecting St John to put a memo out to their workforce encouraging them to participate in the inquiry.”
