Childcare overhaul on ABC's "Life Matters"
The overhaul of Australia's childcare sector was the first topic for discussion on today's "Life Matters" program on ABC Radio National.
Host Richard Aedy reported on the unprecedented reform of this sector in interviews with Sue Lines, LHMU Assistant National Secretary, and Kath, an ABC Learning employee working in regional NSW.
As the sales of the remaining ABC Learning centres gets underway, Kath discussed what it is like for ABC childcare workers living with the continued uncertainty caused by the company's collapse of November last year. A powerful advocate for her profession, Kath spoke of her commitment to childcare and of the need to reform the sector.
The interview also covered the Australian government's COAG quality reform agenda and the soon-to-be-released Senate report on its Inquiry into the Provision of Childcare.
Sue Lines made the point that to be successful reform of the childcare sector must include fair pay for childcare workers, which inevitably means reform of childcare funding.
