Clean Start success in ACT

Thu 23 Apr 09 Comments

Cleaning delegates marked the third anniversary of the Clean Start campaign in Canberra today at a meeting with ACT Deputy Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

Cleaners organised the meeting to acknowledge the Government’s implementation of a fairer contracting system for Government cleaning.

“One year ago cleaners were in the streets demonstrating for the introduction of the new system,” says Lyndal Ryan, Secretary of the ACT Branch of LHMU – The cleaners’ union.

“Today the situation is very different.  The new contracts have been introduced and this afternoon forty school cleaners begin the first group training sessions which include occupational safety and workplace rights.

“Cleaners fought hard to win the new standardised contracts which implement the Clean Start 7 Fair Solutions - fair hours, fair workloads, fair pay, fair job security, fair treatment, fair leave and fair rights.

“The Government should get credit for being the first Australian government to commit to and implement the Clean Start principles into their cleaning contracts.”
