Cleaners on the road to the Clean Start 7 Fair Solutions

Mon 16 Jun 08 Comments

Across the country cleaners have sent a strong message to contract cleaning companies: it’s time to sign up for the Clean Start collective agreement to reform the industry.

The Clean Start negotiating team of LHMU members and officials has been meeting with cleaning contractors over recent weeks on a Clean Start collective agreement.

On 11 June our team met again with representatives of cleaning contractors who have signed on as Clean Start Responsible Contractors.

At the negotiations our team presented the 7 Fair Solutions cleaners that developed for the cleaning industry - Fair Treatment, Fair Hours, Fair Workload and Safety, Fair Wages, Fair Leave, Fair Job Security and Fair Rights.

How are discussions going?

There have been significant breakthroughs in negotiations and results are looking positive for cleaners around the country.

Good progress has been made with contractors agreeing to key improvements cleaners say are needed to create better jobs and a better industry.

Fair Hours - contractors agree in principle to a four hour minimum shift in large offi ce buildings. This is a big step forward!

Fair Job Security - contractors agree to work with us to make sure cleaners can ckeep their jobs after a contract changes.

Fair Wages - contractors agree cleaners need signifi cant pay increases. They will work with us over the next two weeks to decide how increases can be phased in. Progress has also been made on Fair Treatment, Fair Workload and Safety, Fair Leave and Fair Rights.

What happens next?

Our next meeting with contractors will be on 26 June.

Before that meeting we will work hard to finalise the details of many parts of the agreement.

Cleaners make it happen It’s because of the hard work of cleaners in the Clean Start campaign that contractors are fi nally sitting around the table and working with us to improve the cleaning industry.

Cleaners are standing together and fighting to win a fair deal - that’s why we are on the road to winning the 7 Fair Solutions.
