Climate Active conference
LHMU members joined other union members at the Climate Active Conference to talk about action on climate change.
LHMU member and housekeeper Christine Craig went to the conference because, “climate change has to be on the government’s agenda."
"The conference was extremely informative. I spoke to other union members and compared workplaces. It gave me some new ideas. At my work the chemicals don’t have proper signs on them - that’s got to change.
"We have to overcome the negativity – it’s time to pull your finger out. Take action at home, and start spreading the word at work. I’m vegetarian because I love animals and it’s better for the climate. Red meat in particular creates a lot of pollution because of the animals farting!"
Zaman Ahmed is a Clean Start member leader who also went to the conference. "I’m interested in green cleaning and climate change. I come from Bangladesh, and some specialists say it will be under water within fifty years.
"But there is hope. We can change the world. What we have done, we can undo. But it needs hard work, and consciousness by every single person.
"Even though it is very expensive for them, poor countries like Bangladesh have started using solar power. I don’t think there’s a conflict between a better standard of life and going green. If we go green we will have better lives. We need to do both."
