Climate change is serious business for LHMU members

"We are the first lot of union members who have to balance our short term interests in job security, and good terms and conditions with a longer term interest in having a planet we and our children can live on."

Tim Rowbottom, winery Delegate, South Australia

‘I’ve worked in the Barossa Valley wine industry for 11 years. The impacts of climate change are hitting us. The groundwater is becoming salty and the grapes have to be thrown out. Changing temperatures mean that particular climates won’t be suitable for the type of grape that is growing there. And most of the employers are being short-sighted – cutting jobs and pretending that makes them ‘carbon neutral’.

We need to address climate change and make good jobs in sustainable industries at the same time. I’ve got two young kids and I want them to grow up in a decent world.’

Dr Peter Tait, Health Care Professional, Northern Territory

‘Scientists agree that we have about ten years to make the changes necessary to avoid the most dangerous climate change. Through a strong union we can push industry and government to make the changes needed to protect the planet.

Our generation is in a unique position; we are the first lot of union members who have to balance our short term interests in job security, and good terms and conditions with a longer term interest in having a planet we and our children can live on. ‘

Since 2008 the Adelaide Uni has been offering free climate change seminars to the general public.
Some I have attended are very interesting and provide insight to this crucial problem we face.
