Franklin opts for O'Byrne
LHMU members in Tasmania are celebrating the election of David O'Byrne as the new Labor member for Franklin.
Louise Tarrant, LHMU National Secretary has welcomed the election to Parliament of this popular and widely-respected former Secretary of LHMU’s Tasmanian Branch.
“On behalf of LHMU members across Australia I’m delighted to be able to congratulate David on his election to Parliament and on becoming a Minister.
“We’re sad to see him leave his position with our union but his election is great news for working people in Tasmania. I’ve worked closely with David for many years and I know you’d have to look far and wide to find a person with a deeper commitment to workers or, frankly, a more decent human being,” says Louise Tarrant.
David O’Byrne has a special message for Tasmania’s LHMU members:
"We have many challenges ahead and much work to do to ensure we make our community and those that live in it better. I know I can’t do this without your continuing support, and without you being a continuing source of inspiration to me. Continue to let me know your ideas and your thoughts because through this conversation we do make things better for all.
"Thank you all again for your support. The responsibility I now have to make this happen is not lost on me."
Helen Gibbons has succeeded O’Byrne as the LHMU Tasmanian Secretary.
