Gold Coast celebrates Labour Day with new parade route and venue

Fri 30 Apr 10 Comments

Gold Coast workers will celebrate Labour Day 2010 with a new parade route and big celebration at the newly-renovated Southport Broadwater Parklands.

Hundreds of people are expected to turn up for the celebration on Sunday 2 May, which will kick off at the Southport Workers Club on Scarborough Street from 8:30 for a 9am start.

The parade will then march up Scarborough Street through Southport and then left along Marine Parade before finishing at the Parklands.

“The parade route will be significantly longer this year, so everyone has a chance to display their union colours along the Broadwater and the highway,” LHMU Branch Secretary Gary Bullock said.

“After the parade is finished, we’ll end up back at the new Southport Broadwater Parklands

between 10am- 1pm, where there’ll be a live band, barbecue, activities and even sumo suits for the young and young at heart.”

Labour Day is traditionally a time to celebrate the social and economic changes made for workers through the work of the labour movement over the last century.

“Workers really look forward to this chance to celebrate workers’ rights with their union

counterparts as well as their families,” Gary said.

“It’s a chance to look back at how far we’ve come over the decades with pride.”

Unions expected to attend include the LHMU, CFMEU, CEPU, ETU, QPSU, BLF, TSU and AWU among others.
