Government Intervenes in Paramedics' Pay Dispute
*Media Release* The state government is now involved in the paramedics' pay dispute, after meetings between the Department of Health and St John Ambulance commenced this week. 8th October, 2008.
The state government has become involved in the pay dispute between paramedics and their employer, St John Ambulance, with meetings being held between the Department of Health and St John management.
Yet paramedics are furious that the new health minister has reneged on a commitment to meet with them over the dispute.
“Dr Hames told paramedics outside his office two weeks ago that he would make time to meet with them to discuss their concerns,” said Carolyn Smith, assistant secretary of the LHMU.
“He has since refused to meet with them, and has not returned our phone calls or responded to our letters. Paramedics are very disappointed that their input is so unwanted.
“It is vital that the government speaks to paramedics so that dispute can be resolved positively.
“Our paramedics just want at a place at the table so their voice can be heard. Why is that too much to ask?
“While we welcome the government’s intervention, St John Ambulance is not the only party involved here.
“As a doctor, Dr Hames should have a better appreciation than most of the critical role that paramedics play in the health system.
Paramedics from the Ambulance Employees Association will meet with LHMU officials tomorrow to discuss the dispute and a media conference will be held afterwards
