Hospitality Union supports Halls Creek alcohol restrictions

Tue 31 Mar 09 Comments

LHMU has made a submission to the director of Liquor Licensing in support of alcohol restrictions in Halls Creek.

LHMU represents employees in industries that are directly affected by restrictions, including hospitality workers and Aboriginal health workers.

“These alcohol restrictions are an important step to tackling social issues in Halls Creek, issues that are often borne out of alcohol abuse,” said LHMU secretary Dave Kelly.

“The reported high incidence of foetal alcohol syndrome, and other alcohol-related health issues in the Kimberley is a tragedy and is unacceptable.

“Any reasonable measure that could address this terrible situation should be taken.”

LHMU also rejects the Australian Hotels Association’s suggestion that a voluntary programme for pregnant women to decline alcohol is the only measure that should be taken.

“This proposed scheme highlights the ignorance of the AHA in regard to the reality of alcohol addiction,” Dave Kelly said.

“The AHA’s flimsy call to action is a thinly-veiled attempt to protect the AHA’s own interests in Halls Creek.

“Alcohol restrictions in other towns, such as Fitzroy Crossing, where the restrictions were initially unpopular, have been deemed successful.”
