IHG members celebrate their United Voice!
Nine United Voice members from IHG hotels starred in a short film to encourage people to stay at IHG hotels.
Paula Davies, a food and beverage worker from the Holiday Inn Sydney Airport, Anthony Carlson, a housekeeper from Holiday Inn Old Sydney, and Gloria Dalco, a housekeeper from the Holiday Inn Potts Point, were joined by workers from the Intercontinental Adelaide – Myrna Dunne and Barbara Field from the laundry department, Angela Stewart from telephones, Celia Dart from housekeeping, Mary-Ann Pingol from public areas cleaning, and Bun Tan, a chef at the Shiki Restaurant. Members were happy be making the video to show what a difference a union friendly hotel can make to themselves and their colleagues, and to encourage ethical-minded businesses and unions to support better employers.
The video was recently shown to the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), and Joel Ekers from Crown Plaza Adelaide, spoke to the assembled union leaders about the benefits of United Voice working with IHG to deliver better wages and conditions for staff. Joel also told the meeting that having a Union hotel didn’t mean that everything was perfect, but he was happy to have a process and a respected voice to sort things out. Joel and the video were a smashing success, with several large unions committing to move their business to IHG to support Australia’s first ethical/union friendly hotel operator.
This is just one example of the ways in which IHG members are getting active, with the support of their employer, to create Better Jobs, Better Hotels.
