Labor MPs push for pay rise for cleaners
Labor MP Fran Logan will this afternoon move a motion in Parliament calling for a fair pay rise for cleaners of government buildings.
Cleaners working in government buildings were promised a pay rise by the previous Labor government. The pay rise was withdrawn by the Liberals when they formed government and LHMU have since been campaigning for them to reverse their decision.
LHMU assistant secretary Carolyn Smith said: “One of the first things that Mr Barnett and Mr Buswell did when they took office was stop a pay rise for some of the lowest paid workers in this state. Many of these people clean their offices.
“The cleaners were due a $3 per hour increase on 1st October, 2008, and then a further $1.50 per hour increase on 1st January, 2009.
“These are people who saw no benefit from the boom in this state, who have been doing it tough.
“The government’s refusal to honour this policy is a slap in the face to the hard working people who clean government offices.”
