LHMU calls on Canberra to act on ABC Learning
After months of speculation today’s announcement that ABC Learning has been placed in receivership and an Administrator appointed heightens uncertainties surrounding the continued operation of the business, says LHMU – The childcare union.
LHMU National Secretary Louise Tarrant says:
“ABC childcare centres are essential infrastructure for the Australian economy, yet conflicting reports are circulating throughout the country about who is in charge. The 12,000 ABC childcare workers are absolutely essential to the continued provision of that infrastructure.
“The Australian Government needs to take the lead – to be the protector of ABC workers and the 100,000 children at the 1,135 centres across the country.
“We have called on Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard to hold an urgent round table with all stakeholders on the way forward for ABC. Government, the Receivers, the Administrator and the LHMU need to get together to resolve short and long term issues about the continued operation of these centres.
“We’re especially concerned about what is happening to ABC workers, about their future employment and the protection of their entitlements.
“As the holiday season approaches, ABC workers must be able to access their entitlements so that they can take leave and look after their own children.”
