LHMU launches $1000 short film competition

Tue 15 Dec 09

WA’s largest union, the LHMU, which represents thousands of different workers across the state, is launching Summer Challenge, a short film competition with three prizes of $1000 up for grabs.

Budding filmmakers can get their hands on the cash by coming up with an innovative and creative short, no longer than three minutes, which embodies the aims and values of the LHMU.

And entrants don’t need to be fully loaded with all the latest equipment. It’s ideas and creativity the union is looking for and all films will be downloaded onto YouTube.

The winning films will be broadcast at the LHMU Delegates Convention 2010 and if any of them contain LHMU members, the members in the film will share a bonus $1000 per film.

Filmmakers have until 5pm on Friday, February 26, 2010 to come up with an idea, film it, edit it, fill in an online application form and download their completed piece on the LHMU’s YouTube channel.

'Great opportunity'

Kelly Shay, assistant secretary of the LHMU said: “This is a great opportunity for a filmmaker with lots of great ideas.

“The film needs to be positive and should aim to show that joining a union will bring benefits to people and their workplaces.

“It should also be emotive and quirky enough to encourage people to forward it to their friends or include it in their blogs and social networks.”
