LHMU members protest Suu Kyi's imprisonment
Last Monday on the 18th of May in Canberra, LHMU representatives and members attended a protest organised by the Burmese Community in Australia against the continued imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s Pro Democracy leader.
For more than 13 years Ms Suu Kyi has been under house arrest. Then, just two weeks before her detention was to end, Ms Suu Kyi was arrested and sent to jail, charged in connection with an American man who allegedly sneaked uninvited into the compound where she is being held in Yangon.
The charges are absurd because it is the Burmese military, now accusing her of breach of house arrest, that are responsible for the security of the compound. It is a pretext to keep her detained until after elections which are set for 2010.
We are deeply concerned that her freedom and the freedom of the Burmese people are yet again under threat.
On behalf of our members we ask you to bring justice to the situation of Ms Suu Kyi. She and Burma’s other political prisoners must be unconditionally freed immediately.
You can register your concern and demand action through Amnesty Australia’s campaign to free Aung san Suu Kyi at www.amnesty.org.au
