LHMU on Election 2010: Who should workers trust?

Mon 19 Jul 10

LHMU, one of Australias biggest unions, says in the coming federal election health, job security and the environment will be foremost in the minds of Australian workers when they go the ballot box on 21 August.

Louise Tarrant, LHMU National Secretary says "LHMU members will be watching this election campaign very closely because the outcome will influence not only their future but also the future direction of our nation.

"LHMU members often feel disempowered by political processes and feel like no one is listening to the things that matter to them, however they understand that this election is important because our political leaders will make decisions that have a direct impact on members lives.

"Thats why as union members they'll be following the parties policies closely and engaging with local candidates to see where they stand on the issues that count.

"Many LHMU members are doing it tough. So theyll be looking to see where the major parties line up on key issues like wages, job security and superannuation. They will also be interested to see who makes a bigger commitment to our public health and hospitals system, including a real contribution to fixing aged care in Australia. Finally, an effective response on climate change will also be important to making sure we protect the environment for our kids and grandkids.

"WorkChoices has left a long and bitter aftertaste for many LHMU members and Tony Abbott's ever-changing views on its merits make workers both suspicious and nervous. LHMU members cant afford a return to individual contracts and unfair dismissal laws that take away the rights and conditions of working people.

"In looking at Labors record, LHMU members have certainly gained from the quick and decisive intervention around the global financial crisis, the increase to the minimum wage, improved super benefits and the elimination of individual contracts.  However more needs to be done and members will be looking closely to see what a Labor second-term will stand for.

"In many respects LHMU members typify the hard working people who 'set their alarms early' to whom Julia Gillard referred to on the day she became Prime Minister. Theyre the aged care, childcare, hospitality, manufacturing, cleaning, health, security workers and others who work to provide many of the essential services that help keep this country running.

"Our members tell us they want a government that treats workers with fairness and respect. Over the next few weeks they'll be watching closely to see who – Labor or Liberal - earns that trust," says Louise Tarrant.
