LHMU puts on their running shoes in support of women

Tue 10 Mar 09 Comments

The 2009 Adidas International Women's Day Fun Run/Walk, held annually, is arguably one of the largest of its kind in Australia attracting over 6,000 participants each year.

This year, more than 60 LHMU members and staff came together to form one of the largest single contingents in the event.

LHMU participants stood out in their bold maroon colours, making a clear statement of support for the role of women in our society and local communities.

The run/walk, now in its 17th year, is all about bringing together females of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels for a morning of celebration, fun and fitness.

LHMU Assistant Branch Secretary Kerry Tomlinson, said the event was a great opportunity to support women and empower them to excel in everything they do.

"We were proud to be here today, representing LHMU members of which a large proportion are women, participating in an event widely recognised as a significant occasion for all women," Kerry Tomlinson said.

The event has been established to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Many LHMU members know someone ... a family member, a friend, work mate or acquaintance who have been affected by breast cancer. Some may be diagnosed and fortunately overcome their battle with this terrible disease, whilst others unfortunately lose their fight for life.

"What we know is when we act collectively we can overcome unfairness in the workplace, so we felt through our collective efforts we can overcome anything, including terrible diseases like breast cancer," Kerry Tomlinson said.

The LHMU will continue to encourage member participation in a range of events and activities to help improve the society in which we live.

Keep an eye out on-line for future opportunities as they arise.
