LHMU Queensland to fight for public sector rights

Fri 17 Apr 09 Comments

LHMU Queensland - representing thousands of public sector workers - will fight any Government attacks on public sector wages and conditions.

“There’s no way that public sector workers should carry the can for the budget,” LHMU State Secretary Gary Bullock said.

LHMU public sector members include cleaners, teacher aides, health workers and ambulance officers.

“I acknowledge that it is the role of Treasury to provide options and scenarios to Government, but Government is also obliged to reject bad advice,” Mr Bullock said.

“Everybody understands we’re in tough times but we don’t accept this is a proper remedy.

“Reducing spending power in the community is not good economic sense.

“Public sector workers rejected Mr Springborg and the Nationals for their proposed attacks – the government should not think it would be immune from workers anger if it pursued such retrograde steps.”

Mr Bullock said the LHMU fights for its members regardless of who is in power.

“We are just as prepared to fight a Labor government as any other if they attack workers’ rights,” he said.

‘”I call on the government now to put an end to public sector concern by publicly rejecting options that include wage freezes or reduction of conditions.”
