LHMU slams Health Minister's Four Corners response

Tue 07 Jul 09 Comments

The paramedics’ union has hit out at WA Health Minister Kim Hames for his response to last night's Four Corners programme.

The Minister has announced that he will ask the WA Health Department’s Chief Medical Officer, Simon Towler, to investigate the emergency service provider.

However, in a memo distributed to St John Ambulance staff recently, CEO Tony Ahern names Simon Towler as one of the service’s greatest supporters.

“Such a review would be totally inappropriate,” said LHMU WA Assistant Secretary Carolyn Smith.

“The Health Minister needs to give an undertaking, as a matter of urgency, that a review will be held and that the review will be public, independent and thorough.”

The union has also called for Kim Hames to clarify whether St John Ambulance has been required to report sentinel events.

St John Ambulance medical director Garry Wilkes claimed in the Four Corners programme that the service has not been required to report sentinel events, contrary to Health Department guidelines.
