LHMU tackles climate change
LHMU members are working with environmental and industry groups to tackle climate change
Delegates attending a recent National Council’s climate change session heard that members in several industries are already feeling the impact of global warming, from 150 South Australian manufacturing staff whose jobs are at risk because their employer is moving production to Europe in a bid to reduce carbon emissions to the hotel worker who is working longer hours to carry out energy-saving measures.
Australia’s water systems, coasts, ecosystems, agriculture and tourism are at risk from heatwaves, cyclones, drought and fire. This means that every industry and workplace needs to change – and some LHMU members will be in the frontline. In tourism members will be fighting to save our reefs, rainforests, beaches, ski fields and wilderness areas. In property services members will work with the renewable energy and carbon trading sectors. Many industries will only survive by adopting energy-efficient practices.
The union is keen to continue its work with environmental and industry groups into 2009 and we want your input.
