LHMU welcomes proposed dental scheme

An interim report by the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission calling for universal access to dental care has been welcomed by the LHMU.

LHMU secretary Dave Kelly called upon on the Prime Minister to adopt the report’s recommendation for a universal dental healthcare scheme.

Mr Kelly said: “Dental health not being covered under Medicare has caused a lot of pain and suffering for many Australians. Making dental care accessible through a small increase to the Medicare Levy would be a great step forward.

“As the Union representing a very large number of low-paid workers, we know how difficult it is for many Australians to see a dentist.

“Currently, anyone who does not have private health insurance and cannot afford to see a dentist privately has no other option but to go on a government waiting list and can face a wait of more than 27 months to receive treatment.

“This makes access to dental healthcare impossible for many, because of the cost.

“Lack of dental care can lead to dental and other health issues compounding, so it is likely that in the long run this plan will save us money.

“It is a disgrace that in a wealthy country like Australia, many people have to put up with the stigma and pain associated with poor dental care.

“This scheme will mean all Australians will have the opportunity to access both preventative and restorative dental care, regardless of their income.”
