McGuires holding on to WorkChoices

Mon 29 Jun 09 Comments

The McGuires Hotel Group are attempting to introduce ‘WorkChoices’ style agreements in their Queensland pubs despite the system being discredited at the last federal election with Australians voting for their rights at work and new ‘Fair Work’ laws.

Following the roll-out of non-union collective agreements across a number of McGuires hotels last week, both LHMU members and non-members have inundated LHMU Member Assist with requests for union intervention.

Workers are seeking union representation fearing McGuires proposed non-union agreement is being rushed through without adequate consultation in an attempt to avoid new ‘Fair Work’ laws being introduced from 1 July 2009.

Workers at four McGuires hotels are encouraged to vote NO on the proposed non-union ‘WorkChoices’ style agreement to avoid being locked into a sub-standard agreement for the next five years.

The proposed non-union agreement includes measures to avoid penalties and overtime through the manipulation of shift times and rostering, avoids access to the new ‘Fair Work’ laws being introduced from 1 July and the removal of fixed start and finish times.

Members are encouraged to discuss their concerns with their union representative by contacting LHMU Member Assist on 07 3291 4600.
