Robbie Kearns of Melbourne Storm to be Ambassador of Kokoda Youth Trek
Robbie Kearns, Melbourne Storm’s star retired Captain, will today be made an Ambassador of a ground-breaking program that takes youth from Melbourne’s west on the famous Kokoda Track, in an Anti-Poverty Week 2009 event.
At a ceremony today Kearns will become Ambassador of the hugely successful Kokoda Annual Youth Trek, now in its third year, a program that has helped numerous struggling kids steer clear of a life of unemployment and crime.
Kearns will appear at Buckley Park College in Essendon, talking about leadership, teamwork and self-discipline – skills emphasised on the Trek.
So far 51 kids have completed the Kokoda Youth Trek since it began in 2007. All of those on the 2007 trek finished their VCE with many going on to study at university.
Nafissa Abdullahi, a Somali refugee who grew up on the Flemington Housing Estate, will speak about how the Kokoda Youth Trek has shaped her. Nafissa has since completed her VCE and will commence a nursing degree next year.
Inspector Nigel Howard will talk about Victoria Police’s role in coordinating the Trek.
This innovative program brings together a range of backers including Victoria Police, the LHMU, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Host Plus Super.
LHMU State Secretary Jess Walsh said the LHMU is proud to support the Trek.
“The Kokoda Youth Trek is an amazing success story. It has given opportunities to numerous at risk kids, helping them build their self-esteem and discipline.”
“Every one of them has got their lives on track, finishing their VCE and going on to university, other training or a job. It’s great having Robbie and Storm on board.”
“We are a proud supporter of this fantastic program. For us it is about helping the people we represent at work build better lives and stronger communities.”
“In Anti-Poverty Week it is important to remember poverty affects about one million Australians. Unions play a vital role in helping many of these Australians climb out of poverty by campaigning for good jobs and decent pay.”
Melbourne Storm champion Robbie Kearns’ 13 year career spanned 283 career games. It also included a premiership, 8 games for NSW and 14 tests for Australia.
He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australia's international standing in rugby league while wearing the green and gold jersey.
The LHMU is one of Australia’s largest unions with 120,000 members across childcare, property services, hospitality, health and manufacturing. It has a strong community program, including its Service Stars Community Jobs Alliance.
