Member wins his job back

Thu 20 Nov 08 Comments

You don’t expect to get sacked for making an honest mistake.

St Albans cleaner Dominic Hereaka certainly didn’t, when he accidentally took some keys home for a car he uses for work.

When the night manager couldn’t find them, he called Dominic.

“He told me to bring them back. But I couldn’t get them back until the morning.”

“Then he threatened to sack me. ‘If I have to come and get them, you won’t come back to work’, he told me.”

Dominic knew his rights. “You can’t do that, I’m in the Union,” he replied.

But Dominic was sacked — and it was a big scare.

“I’ve got a family and I’ve got to support them. I’ve got bills,” he says.

That’s when Dominic called the LHMU Union Rights Centre for help.

They took up his case. And after a month of negotiation with the company, they got him his job back.

Dominic says he “felt over the moon” when he heard the news.

“It’s good to have things back to normal,” he says.

Dominic is proud to be an LHMU member.

“I got excellent help from the Union.”
