Members, Ministers and Senators meet at Parliament House

Wed 19 Aug 09 Comments

On Tuesday over 100 delegates and a number of observers descended on Canberra for the 2009 LHMU National Council.

Council began with a Welcome to Country and then heard from Professor Bill Mitchell from the Centre for Full Employment and Equity. Bill spoke powerfully on 'Fair Pay, Decent Work and a Sustainable Economy'.

He argued that it is essential for the LHMU and the union movement to be part of the debate about what our national economy should be delivering. We need to ask ourselves and our politicians, do we work for the economy or should the economy work for us?

Sue LInes, Senator Chris Evans, Jodie Campbell Member for Bass, David O'Byrne and Louise Tarrant at Parliament HouseIn the evening delegates met with Labor Members and Senators for drinks at Parliament House. It was a lively, informal and friendly affair with members and politicians chatting, laughing and arguing about the best way forward for workers in Australia. Clean Start delegate, Christine Wagland, gave a moving account of her journey through the Clean Start campaign.

The message from delegates to all the Senators and Ministers who attended the drinks was clear; well done on the new industrial relations laws, there’s more to be done and by working together we can make these laws work for everyone.
