Menzies cleaners must vote no
Menzies is asking school cleaners to vote on an income protection provision in their new Enterprise Agreement that cuts their pay rise.
LHMU and Menzies have been trying to reach agreement on a new Enterprise Agreement that would cover cleaners' wages and conditions. However, Menzies wants to introduce income protection insurance and they want cleaners to pay for it each year. Menzies' proposal means discounting cleaners' wages and allowances by 1.39%, so they only get a 2.11% pay rise, compared to the 3.5% paid by other companies.
LHMU NSW Branch Assistant Secretary Mel Gatfield says LHMU disagrees with the provision because it means a lower hourly rate for Menzies cleaners. "It is important that all cleaners working in schools have the same conditions," she says. "It’s important that all Menzies cleaners vote no."
Once this provision is voted on, a full agreement will be sent out to cleaners to vote on.
