MP Tanya Gadiel supports school cleaners

Tue 04 May 10 Comments

NSW school cleaners continue their lobbying of local MPs this week.

LHMU members met with Member for Parramatta MP Tanya Gadiel yesterday and told her what school cleaners needed to improve their working lives.

Rosehill Public School cleaner Suresh Subramanian spoke to the MP about the need for a portability of long service leave scheme for school cleaners. "[It's] important to me even though I’m not affected now because the same company has always got the same region," Suresh says. "[But] other cleaners worked for a few [different] companies in the same time and they start from fresh again and again."

"With the change in contract, if the company doesn’t get it then I will lose [my long service leave]."

Suresh says the MP was supportive and was "going to talk to the Department of Commerce to put something in the new contract".

"[The government] should choose a few good companies to win the tender," Suresh says. "And not go for the low tender so we can keep good standards."

School cleaners are knocking on MPs doors all throughout Term 2. Want to support NSW school cleaners? Contact the Member Service Centre on 1800 805 027 for some postcards to get friends and family to sign.
