No show from Tabcorp leaves part timers in limbo

Just weeks ago LHMU members chose to stand up to Jupiter’s casino management and refuse to accept a reduction in working conditions without a fight! Part time employees voted to stand their ground and support each other for a fair go.
In May Jupiter’s Casino tried to introduce roster changes with little to no consultation with staff.
At a meeting of affected workers, LHMU delegates explained that these changes would see permanent part time staff moving to a more flexible rostering system with NO guarantee that their regular eight hours would be rostered on their regular three days of work, as identified in their contracts when they started.
The question that LHMU members are asking Tabcorp is “Why now??” and not at EBA time, which is less than 12mths away.  Tabcorp say that they could do this whenever they wanted, if it was in the best interest of the company. The question workers are now asking, “what about our best interests??”
LHMU delegates – Berdj Katazian, Jane Packer and Ray Kington have been representing members on this issue for several months and have taken a hard line on  the Casino’s push to reduce working conditions. However, even though they’ve taken a hard line they have been willing to negotiate a fair settlement with management since day one and are continuing to try and reach a resolution. LHMU delegates have held a series of workers meetings to discuss the proposed rostering changes and the unfair affects on members and their families.
After the first two worker meetings held on Friday 11 June, LHMU members moved a resolution to make sure that no member lost any conditions. They did this by enforcing the Union agreement on site.

The Union agreement means that whilst members don’t agree with management action, the changes management are trying to introduce can’t happen.
LHMU Delegates, Berdj Katazian, Jane Packer & Ray Kington have been instrumental in getting members together on this issue:
“The ability for us to stand strong under our Union agreement is vital in fights like this. Without it, management would do whatever they like in this place.”
Despite a dispute meeting between Delegates and Tabitha Pearson (Human Resources Director for South East Queensland) no agreement could be reached. As a result, Tabcorp filed a dispute with fair Work Australia.
Fair Work Australia called a dispute conference for  Friday 16 July at 1pm however much to the surprise of everyone including Fair work Australia, they didn’t even bother to show up! Since May Jupiter’s workers have been standing together in solidarity and building strength to take on management when they are trying to reduce working conditions.

LHMU Table Games Delegates Berdj Katazian, Jane Packer & Ray Kington asked “if this can happen to part timers in one section of the casino, can it happen in  other sections and what protection does everyone have?”
That’s why Delegates and affected members are asking Jupiter’s Casino workers to join them and fight for a fair go at Jupiter’s.

Not even bothering to show up to a meeting with Fair Work Australia gives the impression they treat this dispute with contempt and is somewhat patronizing of employees. My expectation of Tabcorp's Human Resources Department as a fair, positive and approachable team does not provide me with confidence. The Shine Award programme and 5 F's dogma being preached to employees appears dispelled by their attitude and that of management in this dispute. Every dispute has a middle ground provided both sides in any situation are willing to put their ego's aside and compromise for the benefit of those affected and those they serve. Only then can we focus on providing quality and innovative service to all our customers.
