Not good enough, say Wattyl workers
In worksites across Australia Wattyl Australia Ltd workers are continuing their fight for a fair agreement. The workers are about to enter their fourth week of protected industrial action and are more united and determined than ever.
At a meeting on 14 July Management refused to budge on their earlier offer which averages less than 3% per year.
The workers are disappointed by the Company’s approach and the lack of respect it reveals. They expect better from the Company they helped get through the global financial crisis. They want pay increases of 4% per annum, which, unlike the amount offered by Wattyl, should keep pace with cost of living
Here’s what Wattyl delegates say:
“We just believe the offer they’ve given us not good enough. People feel very strongly 2.5% is insulting. I believe they can afford to pay more. Production is strong, they’re above budget. They’re stronger now than before the GFC. Their current offer shows they don’t respect us. People are upset. The only way to win this is if we all stick together.” - Russell Wilson

"What we’re asking for is reasonable. We haven’t had a pay rise for 18 months. I’ve got a mortgage and four kids to support. We helped get Wattyl through the GFC. They took away our Christmas bonus, Christmas party and overtime and free drinks during the hot weather. We put up with all this to help them get through the downturn. It feels good to know Wattyl members across Australia are all standing together. We all need to stay strong and stand up for what we believe in.” - Brad Grigg.
Whether they’re in factories in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria or West Australia the workers are determined not to settle for anything less than a fair deal, so stoppages will continue.
