Star City staff to fight for fair wage increase
Star City staff have overwhelmingly voted on a resolution to reject casino management's sub-standard offer of a 1.5% pay rise in the first year.
Large numbers of Star City staff came along to the LHMU organised EA information sessions over the weekend to inform staff about management's offer.
After four months of negotiations, Star City management decided to put a sub-standard offer to a staff vote. Star City management’s offer contains:
- a pay rise of 1.5% in 2009, 2.5% in 2010 and 3% in 2011, with no back pay
- a removal of the guaranteed dealer career progression from the current EA
- a reduction in the rate of sick leave accrual.
Star City delegate and housekeeper Jackie Johnson says the casino's offer means staff are going backwards. "This is a sub-standard offer by Star City management," she says. "Staff are telling us that they want a fair wage offer that at least improves their standard of living."
Staff had already shown their dissatisfaction with the low pay offer by signing more than 1,200 petition cards and handing them over to management.
Also at the information sessions, casino staff resolved to continue to campaign for a fair wage increase without the loss of conditions, and called on Tabcorp to authorise a fair wage offer.
Star City staff will get the chance to vote on management’s offer shortly. Management has not yet provided details on the vote.
LHMU NSW Branch President Jim Lloyd says, "The vote is an opportunity for staff to send a strong message to management that the offer is sub-standard and unacceptable to the hardworking staff at Star City."
