Stop the rip-off! Join our biggest ever audit of Victorian security guards!

VIC Stop the rip-off flyer image

Last month, the employment watchdog released its report on Victorian security contractors.

This investigation revealed guards are being underpaid and ripped off – often by thousands of dollars.

Many guards know what it’s like not being paid our full legal entitlements, like penalty rates, superannuation and sick pay.

LHMU Security Union members are working together to stamp out these rogue contractors, who make it harder for those trying to do the right thing.

We want to hear about your experiences working in the industry. Your responses will help us build a strong case for change.

These rip offs are not only common in VIC its common place all the states. I come from NSW and you still pick up the paper and still see security jobs being advertised saying 'you must have an ABN' to apply for this position.Cant the workplace ombudsman read? Its not hard to see that these employers are flaunting the rules every which way they can.I believe that all states ombudsman/unions and employees are going to really have to work hard to stamp out these shonky cowboys in this industry. I would like to see a national campaign in place called 'Dob in a Dodgy'. Every body in this industry has to work together to stamp out these terrible practices.

(company cannot be named) I believe is misleading our industry.
I went for an interview last Monday night at a fast food outlet in Noble Park of all places, and from what their Web page states it is not so. I was under the impression that they were a professional company involved in many aspects of this industry.

The problem with the security today is that it costs so much for new and current licenses every year (as in the first aid cert at Wilson - we pay to do the course but we don't get paid any extra to work with it).
Also a security license should be Australia wide not just each state where we must pay for our license every time that we work interstate.
Maybe this should be looked at for all your members and then a lot more security guards would join the union

I totally agree with Reg. The licenses should be acceptable in all states within Australia. I think the Security Industry has become more greedy at collecting extra revenue especially since the introduction of license classifications where we have to pay extra to hold other classifications you may have.
As all RPL'S and RTO's are mandatory and recognized by all states why cant your license be the same? This really needs to be looked into. We are one of the lowest paid professions out there yet we have to pay a lot more money out of our own pocket to keep our jobs!

These operators have been able to trade for many years. l have worked for some companies who sub-contract security officers that are poorly trained and have little or no experience and are happy to work for $10 per hour.
The current fee to renew your license is not affordable for some security officers in particular those who work on a casual basis.
I have had a security license since 1988 and have not once had a representative from Licensing request to see my license on site in 22 years. Perhaps a regular spot check by inspectors will help stamp out rogue officers.
