Carlos Rios Valereia was working two cleaning jobs to support himself as a student studying English.
When he broke his wrist, he told his supervisor at United Facilities Group. It was not a problem, he was told.
But the next time Carlos (pictured) saw his boss, he was sacked.
‘You can’t come back, you are finished, because I got another person who is working better than you,’ Carlos was told.
Carlos knew the supervisor was “saying false things” and would often bully workers. Carlos immediately called the URC.
With the URC’s help, he won his job back.
‘The union make it possible to defend my rights. If I went alone to speak with the boss, he wouldn’t listen to me, but all the time with the union they listen to us,’ said Carlos.
Carlos also has an
evening job with Clean Start contractor Glad. But he said he had no
problem returning to that job after recovering from his injury.
The URC can explain and enforce your rights at work.
