Tasmanian breakthrough on fair deal for cleaners

Wed 18 Feb 09 Comments

Tasmania’s office cleaners are one step closer to fair pay and reasonable working conditions.

David O’Byrne, Tasmanian Branch Secretary speak to the Clean Start rally in HobartDavid O’Byrne, Tasmanian Branch Secretary of the LHMU – The cleaners’ union says:

“Cleaners welcome Tasmanian Treasurer Michael Aird’s proposal to ‘mandate a requirement for all Government cleaning contract tenderers to adopt the “Clean Start” principles, including the Clean Start Collective Agreement’ from 1 July 2009.

“After almost three years of campaigning, cleaners are relieved that better jobs in the contract cleaning industry are one step closer.

“However, this proposal is subject to Cabinet approval.

“On behalf of every hard-working Tasmanian office cleaner I urge Cabinet to do the right thing by cleaners. With Cabinet support Tasmania’s cleaners will be able to catch up with the mainland where the majority of CBD office buildings are already cleaned by contractors who have signed on to the Clean Start Collective Agreement.

“Now that the State Government is leading the way I hope Tasmania’s contractors, especially our largest contract cleaning company, General and Window, will finally get behind the campaign to fix the crisis in their industry and sign on to the Agreement.”
