Tasmania’s cleaners are celebrating International Cleaners’ Day on Parliament House lawns in Hobart today with a rally, soup lunch and the official Golden Toilet Brush Awards ceremony attended by Premier David Bartlett.

International Cleaners’ day is celebrated in the United States, New Zealand and Australian capital cities. A highlight of the day is the announcement of the winner of the Golden Toilet Brush Award. The Award is bestowed on the company or individual who has done least to give cleaners a fair go.

In a heavily contested field, Tasmania’s winner by a long mile is cleaning contractor General and Window Cleaning Pty Ltd.

Helen Gibbons, Tasmanian Branch Secretary of “General and Window has been dogged in its refusal to sign on to the Clean Start Agreement, an Agreement which provides fair pay and working conditions for cleaners.

“This is an issue that goes beyond the cleaners employed by this contractor. As one of the largest contract cleaning companies in Tasmania, General and Windows’ failure to sign on to Clean Start is holding up better entitlements for all cleaners in Tasmania, entitlements which have already been triggered in a majority of CBD’s around Australia.

“Tassie’s cleaners work hard providing an essential service for our community. It’s time for our State’s cleaners to stop missing out on improved pay and working conditions.

“That’s why cleaners hope General and Window will see today’s Award as a chance to clean up their act and do the right thing.
