Treasury workers fight against 'unhealthy' conditions
Call to support casino workers in their campaign for improved terms of employment
Staff at Treasury Casino in Brisbane are calling on members nationally to support their campaign for better pay and rosters.
Tabcorp owns both Treasury and Star City Casino in Sydney. But unlike workers at Star City, Treasury employees – who range from security guards, maintenance crew and housekeepers to bar and gaming table staff – are on a lower base wage and are not paid penalties or shift allowances.
Grade One workers at Treasury earn just $17.50 an hour, with many finding it hard to make ends meet, according to Carl Taylor, who works in the kitchen as a steward.
‘I manage to cover rent and bills but there’s not a lot left over,’ he said. ‘I can’t afford to buy a car or maintain one. But I’m not as badly off as some others. Some have childcare costs and cars to run. They need a pay rise just to get by.’
Unfair rostering is another issue members at Treasury are taking up with their employer.
‘In my department you can finish working at 11pm and be expected to be back at work at 7am,’ said Carl. ‘It’s just unhealthy.’
