URC kicks goal for Angela
Bar-worker and LHMU member, Angela Billman, has won thousands of dollars in back pay — with a bit of help from the LHMU Union Rights Centre (URC).
Angela (pictured) has worked behind the bar at the Northcote Football Club since 1995.
But for five years she wasn’t paid overtime, higher duties allowance or weekend penalties. So she called the URC for help.
Angela said winning the payout was a great relief. Many years of doing bar work has left her with a permanent disability.
Her doctor said she’s not allowed to return to her old job and her Workcover payments cut out later this year.
‘I am relieved. It takes away some of the worry about my financial future,’ she said.
‘The URC were great.They told me about my rights and worked out how much I was entitled to.
‘My employer tried to fight it. So we took him to court and it was eventually settled.
‘You’re stupid if you’re not in the union.You don’t know when you’re going to need them.
‘What would I have done without the union?’
