Western Australian member of parliament Chris Tallentire (Member for Gosnells) accepted the LHMU's challenge to walk a day in the shoes of a disability care worker.

As part of the LHMU’s programme to ensure that election candidates experience firsthand what life is like for working people in Australia, today Labor member for Gosnells Chris Tallentire walked a day in the shoes of LHMU member and disability care coordinator Mal Dunlop.

Mr Tallentire’s day with Mr Dunlop began at 6 am on Monday morning and continued with Mr Tallentire joining Mr Dunlop as he cared for five people with disabilities in their Nulsen Haven home.

Among the tasks that Mr Tallentire undertook was preparing meals, helping feed the residents, making beds, and taking the residents for a walk.

“Like many people, I was uncertain about what to expect from working with people with disabilities,” Mr Tallentire said.

“The impression I got today was of a homely atmosphere, and the residents were very inspiring people with different personalities.

“People who work with people with disabilities are wonderful, dedicated professionals.”

LHMU Secretary Dave Kelly said the event was a good opportunity for our parliamentary representatives to gain firsthand insight at how LHMU members live and work.

“This was our first ‘walk a day in my shoes’ and we are pleased that it was a success.”

We need more "walks" like that and we need more people from different sectors to "Walk a mile in another person's shoes" to feel their warmth, comfort and wellbeing.
