Workers tell Hyatt to sign up for better jobs, better hotels
The majority of Hyatt workers in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and the Gold Coast have signed campaign pledges asking their boss to create better jobs in hotels. Today worker reps around the country presented these pledges to hotel management.
Adelaide workers want a fairer workplace
At the Adelaide Hyatt, workers asked to hand the pledges to the general manager, but were told that he was too busy. The worker reps expressed their anger and disappointment, and left the pledges with the manager’s assistant. “We want a better, fairer workplace” said Hyatt Adelaide worker Alex Maddern.
Sydney hotel workers present their pledges
At Sydney’s Park Hyatt hotel, the delegation presented pledges to HR and explained why workers had signed up to the campaign. Worker Dominic Houde said: “A lot of my friends have left the industry because they can get better money elsewhere.”
At the Gold Coast workers track down “unavailable” management
At the Hyatt Gold Coast at the fi rst attempt to hand over pledge cards, HR had put a sign on their door saying ‘unavailable for the day’. Giving it a second go, eight workers managed to hand over the pledges to the head of HR.
Melbourne workers ready for change
It was clearly outlined to HR by workers in the Park Hyatt Melbourne that workers deserve respect and things need to change. Waiter Jaime Pappas said: “We are so chronically understaffed at the moment that it makes it really hard to maintain standards”.
Handyman Michael Sulja said: “We are one of the lowest paid industries and with the prices of everything going up, a lot of us are only scraping by.”
At the Grand Hyatt Melbourne the meeting with management was called off at the last minute but pledge cards were handed at the rescheduled meeting Monday.
