Your rights at work - worth finding out about

Fri 25 Jun 10 Comments (4)

Hospitality workers come from many different types of venues and face many different types of challenges.

One challenge many workers in the hospitality industry face is simply knowing how to identify what they are entitled to.

LHMU members within the hospitality industry have expressed concern about being asked to pay back short tills behind the bar, despite three or four workers having used the till on a busy night.

To address issues like these as well as others, LHMU members determined to improve current practices across the industry have scheduled a forum to encourage students and potential members to engage with people in the know.

At the recent LHMU Delegates' Convention, hospitality members agreed to hold five Hospitality Expo's across south-east Queensland as a forum for discussion about issues within the industry.

Each Expo will include information stalls from union service providers, government agencies and LHMU Queensland.

Guest speakers will cover a variety of topics including workers and the law, union membership benefits and the importance of actively contributing to the future of LHMU for the benefit of all members.

LHMU will facilitate workshops on how to read an award, membership benefits and building power in your workplace.

If you know someone who works in hospitality or you yourself would like to find out more about your rights at work, you are welcome to attend the next Expo scheduled for Thursday 15 July, 2010 between 10am and 4pm at the Southport Workers and Community Club, 154a Scarborough Street, Southport QLD, 4215.

Im currently fighting an employer over bulling and fair rights for staff at my place of employment. Currently im going through work comp which I understand is a difficult situation to prove without witnessness to back up my claims. The potiential witnessess I have are afraid of losing their employment due to the severity of bullying/ dictatorship of management within our employment that I would appreciate some form of back up from this union to keep these employees working as they are very good at what they do for this industry. I am currently a newly established member and have been recuiting members from my place of employment since I joined 28th may 2010. What help and advice can you give me to fight the injustice that not only I have endured but what my fellow workmates have endured to keep them protected? I only want justice and a fair outcome as enough is enough of the mental and psychological abuse at our workplace.

Just what I have read within dinah jurys' statement is part of my strength. I knew I had rights as a worker but without backup I was on my own. Joining LHMU gave me strength, collective strength, with knowledge. I now use that knowledge gained through training by the LHMU to better my work place and my work Industry, Hospitality.

I have heard that there is a high degree of bullying happening at NT especially at McArthur river. Apparently there are new managers at the accommodation site who are bullying staff with comments like "we are in charge now so you do what we say".
